Panettone:

Originally from Milan, Panettone has become the ultimate of Italian Christmas cakes. It can be found in almost every Italian household around the holidays. A rich egg bread studded with raisins, candied citron, and laced with a hint of rum and vanilla, it is made with a special, natural yeast which gives it a soft and delicate texture. It is traditionally served after the Christmas meal along with a glass of dessert wine, mixed nuts, dried fruit and torrone. It can be simply toasted or served with creme anglaise or fresh marscapone cheese. It also makes a delicious French toast. Rustichella d'Abruzzo commissions a small bakery to produce the panettone to order. It does so only in the month of October. They are flown in from Italy in early November.
